Ensuring Safe Walking Surfaces with Exposed Concrete
In the world of architectural exposed concrete floors, few things are as important as the coefficient of friction (COF). However, the industry has suffered from an almost antithetical approach in which floors are beautiful but answers to questions surrounding their prime function-a safe walking surface-have until recently been harder to define. The correct way to measure initial COF for exposed concrete surfaces is with ANSI/National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) B101.3, Wet Dynamic COF Standard. The prescriptive method for describing, installing, and maintaining safe COF is with the International Society of Construction Sciences (ISCS) 101, Surface Texture Grade and Coefficient of Friction Guideline.
