A new idea

The goal is to improve on the numbering system for specifications, which is to focus on solving the current limitations:

  • Rigid hierarchy that’s difficult to extend.
  • Material-based organization instead of system-based organization.
  • Difficult to use with BIM, digital twins, databases, and AI.
  • Limited support for prefabrication, modular construction, robotics, and lifecycle information.
  • Large amounts of “empty” numbering.
  • Similar systems scattered across multiple divisions.

Proposed: Universal Construction Specification Format (UCSF)

Instead of a simple division-section numbering system, every specification receives a structured identifier.

[System]-[Subsystem]-[Component]-[Function]-[Revision]

Example: ST.FR.BM.AN.001

means

Structure
Frame
Beam
Analysis
Revision 001
